The stories of Vince Russo running WCW are the stuff of legends. Not good legends...but legends. Kind of like the legends of the Trojans being fooled by a giant, wooden horse full of enemy soldiers, or that guy who was cursed by the Greek gods to have his kidneys repeatedly eaten out every single day by a bird. Ya know...tragic legends. But man, it's fun to look back on and laugh at! We are only covering from October 1999 until the end of January 2000 on this podcast, and that's plenty! This was Russo's first run as The Powers That Be. We never actually saw his face on camera, but he began his reign of terror and then took his ball, went home, and cried in January when he wasn't getting things his way. I wouldn't call this one a "classic," but it was definitely a much better than average show that hardly ever gets talked about. Rob Van Dam and Chris Jericho tear it up for the Hardcore Title, Shane McMahon & Booker T fight to take the WCW Title away from The Rock, there's some 4-team mayhem for the WWF Tag Titles, and Stone Cold defends his WWF Title in the main event against Kurt Angle. The Invasion is still going on here as The Alliance is being led into battle by Stone Cold with only the Olympic gold medalist standing in his way. Oh, and they're in Angle's hometown of Pittsburgh. Also, if you need a bit of a laugh, KroniK looks like they forgot how to wrestle as they take on The Brothers of Destruction for the WCW Tag Titles. This was the first Fall Brawl without a WarGames match and the second-to-last Fall Brawl ever. The house was only about 50% full, and if you see this show, you'll know exactly why. And, this is was about 2 months before Vince Russo even gets ahold of this train wreck of a company! Can you play mind games with someone who doesn't have much of a mind!? I don't know, but Shawn Michaels said something to this effect, and it was weird. This main event may be a somewhat forgotten classic, absolutely shattering all expectations as Mankind steps into the ring with WWF Champion Shawn Michaels in Mankind's first ever title match! Billy Gunn continues his infatuation with Sunny as the Smoking Gunns defend their Tag-Team Titles against Owen Hart & British Bulldog. Jim Cornette (after being knocked colder than a banker's heart by Jose Lothario) signed away contracts of his clients to Clarence Mason. The Undertaker does battle with Goldust in a Final Curtain match. This show also went down in Philadelphia, so you know the ECW faithful had to be heard (with some ECW wrestlers even being seen at ringside). This was Legend vs Icon as Shawn Michaels took on Hulk Hogan! This was the big, built up, main event of the evening. However, almost this entire show was great. If you skip the first couple of matches, no one would blame you. That adds up to a total of 5 minutes (not joking). After that, we've got an amazing WWE Title match between John Cena and Chris Jericho, Batista defending the World Heavyweight Title against JBL in a No Holds Barred contest, the Undertaker and Randy Orton having a WrestleMania 21 rematch, Eddie Guerrero doing battle with Rey Mysterio in a Custody of Dominik Ladder Match (yes, the custody of a child is on the line in a match), and much more! This show is often laughed at for Shawn Michaels' somewhat cartoonish selling, but that match was actually fantastic. In 2010, almost an entire decade after the closure of ECW, TNA Wrestling decided to resurrect the corpse of the South Philly, bingo hall, wrestling promotion and let it have one last run in the limelight...for one night only! However, due to copyright issues, many names were changed and the letters "E-C-W" could not be uttered or displayed. Most of these matches were...not good. Not even kind of, in a weird way, good. However, The Marks (Greg & Troy) try to make the best of this one and laugh along to this final run of what would become EV 2.0. If you're a long-time listener to the podcast, you'll know that the Marks (Troy & Greg) don't like ECW. However, this show broke the mold. This may be the greatest top-to-bottom effort Extreme Championship Wrestling ever put forth. It's the Match Made in Heaven and the Match Made in Hell! The Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth have their wedding in the ring to close this show and the actual main event is Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior taking on The Triangle of Terror (Sgt. Slaughter, Gen. Adnan, & Col. Mustafa) in a Handicap Match! The wrestling world was a little weird in 1991. This show in particular would be a turning point for the WWF where the Ultimate Warrior would get fired directly after his match, the Macho Man was asked to step back into the ring, and many feuds were shaken up. WCW was a coffin on roller skates at this point and had been for quite a while. While this didn't win any Worst Major Wrestling Show of the Year awards, it was certainly in contention.
